In May, the Carson College of Business graduated its first two students who earned minors in senior living management. They are Yang Du and Katie Vail.

Students

A video about the history of Seattle’s Edgewater Hotel includes research from four Carson College students: Maddy Cone, Riley Gilbertson (’19 Hosp. Busi. Mgmt.), Tu Le (’20 Hosp. Busi. Mgmt.), and Tasmiah Shams (’20 Hosp. Busi. Mgmt.). The students worked on the project over the past five years in conjunction with students from the WSU Edward R. Murrow College of Communication.

Four Carson College students were awarded the US Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad. Makayla Daniels, an international business major, received the scholarship to study in, Japan; Viviana Murillo Rangel, accounting major, Spain and Portugal; Claudia Jacobo, business administration minor, Japan; Martin Navarrete-Contreras, business administration minor, Spain and Portugal.

Five students placed at WSU Pullman’s second annual Spring Sales Competition. Reed Ellis (’22 Psych.) took first in the advanced sales category, and Nicole Griffin placed second. Sam Griffith placed first in the introduction to professional sales category, Cameron Neilsen was second, and Ashley Buhner was third. The competition was sponsored by PayneWest Insurance.

Tessa Belsher placed first in the financial accounting competition and second in business plan/starting a business at DECA’s Northwest region conference. Molly Williams placed third in the marketing management competition.
Kierra Flaherty received a $10,000 scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board for the 2022–2023 academic year. She is a senior majoring in accounting.
Olga Gira received the WSU Accounting Scholarship, the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants Educational Foundation Scholarship, and a scholarship from Financial Executives International in Portland. She is an accounting student at WSU Vancouver.
Yafang Li’s (’22 PhD) research on how to keep people using fitness trackers placed first in the college’s Three-Minute Thesis event. Held each spring, the competition requires doctoral students to explain the significance of their research in three minutes or less.
Kateryna Maistrenko (’22 Intl. Busi., Econ.), a student-athlete from Ukraine on WSU’s women’s rowing team, received the 2022 President’s Award honoring those who advance leadership and engagement at WSU and beyond. WSU President Kirk Schulz presented the award at the WSU Leadership and Engagement Awards of Distinction in April.

Calli Shafer (‘22 Fin., Mktg.), and Rachel Willison (’22 Mktg.), were part of a team that won a Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities gray award in the engineering and physical sciences category. Their project was titled “Aircraft Skin Defection Inspection Via Drone.”

Shirin Shahsavand, a doctoral student in operations and management science, received the WSU Graduate and Professional Student Association’s 2022 Graduate Teaching Assistance Excellence Award.
Nolan Thomaswick (’22 Accounting), a WSU Global Campus student from Toledo, Ohio, was recognized as a WSU Top Ten Senior for campus involvement. He was the president of ASWSU-Global, chair of the ASWSU-Global Resource Allocation and Accountability Committee, and student ambassador for WSU Global Connections.
Gurdeep Singh Raina, a doctoral student in management, received the 2022 Community Engagement Award from the WSU Graduate and Professional Student Association. Raina also placed second in the college’s Three–Minute Thesis competition.

Eleven accounting students each received $5,000 scholarships from the Washington Society of CPAs: Felicia Adesope, Juan Alcaraz, Tessa Belsher, Daniel Borrelli, Dominic Devengenzo, Katherin Gordham, Gabrielle Isaak, Jackson Kembel, Cory Mingo, Mackenzie Nation, Jennifer Sizemore. Benjamin Warren, the society’s student outreach and initiatives coordinator, presented the scholarships at the Beta Alpha Psi/Department of Accounting’s spring banquet in April.

Bob Wiese, an executive MBA student, is the new owner of Custom Fabrication Design, a Spokane area-based company specializing in 3D design, multi-medium fabrication, and installation.

Alumni

Andreas Bohman (’19 MBA) is the new vice president of University of Washington Information Technology and UW’s chief information officer. He has more than 20 years of leadership experience in technology, security, and operations, and previously served as vice president of operations at Central Washington University.
Gihan Edirisinghe (’20 PhD) received the inaugural Early Career Teaching Award from the Gordon Ford College of Business at Western Kentucky University, where he is an assistant professor. The award recognize pre–tenure instructors for early career teaching innovations and excellence.
Richard French (’98 Busi.) is the new executive director of Palouse Knowledge Corridor, a regional economic development organization that brings talent and expertise from regional universities to offer Palouse-based activities for the benefit of the local community. French was president and CEO of Federal Engineers and Construction during his 15 years with the company and served as a project manager for Lockheed Martin Services.
Alexander Mackh (’15 Hosp. Busi. Mgmt.) was featured in Forbes’s 30 under 30 list for Europe. He is the founder of Grassl Glass, which makes wine glasses that match a wine’s style (such as acidity, alcohol, body, or tannins) rather than a wine’s regional or grape varietal. The Switzerland-based entrepreneur made $1 million last year selling his glasses to restaurants and wine enthusiasts, according to Forbes.
Nam Nguyen (’20 Intl. Busi., Mktg., Honors) was named to the 2022 Diana Award Roll of Honor for his work addressing several social causes, including mental health, public service, and international education accessibility. Established in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, the award is a charity legacy of her belief that “young people have the power to change the world.”
Tom Norwalk (’76 Comm.), a 2020 inductee into the School of Hospitality Business Management’s Hall of Fame, has retired from Visit Seattle after a long career in the hospitality industry.
Alexandros Paparas (’21 PhD) received the Dean’s Excellence Faculty Mentor Award from Eastern Washington University’s College of Professional Programs. He is an assistant professor in information systems and business analytics.
Xun Xu (’15 PhD) was elected to the board of the Production and Operations Management Society College of Service Operations. He is an associate professor at California State University, Dominguez Hills.

Faculty/Staff

Jesus Bravo has been promoted to associate professor (career track) in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Michelle Carter, associate professor of management information systems, received the 2022 Faculty Woman of Distinction award from the President’s Commission on the Status of Women. Carter also received a WSU Graduate Academic Advisor Excellence Award for 2021–2022 from the Graduate and Professional Student Association.
Joe Compeau has been promoted to full professor (career track) in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Chris Cooney has been promoted to associate professor (career track) in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Xinghua Gao has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the Department of Accounting.
Dipra Jha, scholarly associate professor and assistant director for the School of Hospitality Business Management, was among five faculty and staff members to receive this year’s President’s Award for Leadership. Jha’s nominations included his recent election to the State of Washington Tourism Board of Directors as evidence of the respect he garners for his leadership and expertise in the field.
Hana Johnson, assistant professor of management, information systems, and entrepreneurship, is the coauthor of an article in the Journal of Organizational Behavior, “More Depleted, Speak up More? A Daily Examination of the Benefit and Cost of Depletion for Voice Behavior and Voice Endorsement.”
Jeff Joireman received a Fulbright Award to work at the ESDES School of Business and Management in Lyon, France last spring. Joireman presented three research workshops, coached several faculty members, and worked with the associate dean to discuss strategies for supporting an academic research culture. Joireman is professor and chair of the Department of Marketing and International Business.
Alex Kier has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Amrita Lahiri received the 2022 Helena Yli-Renko Research Impact Award for a 2015 paper she coauthored with Greg Fisher and Suresh Kotha. The award recognizes an entrepreneurship paper that appeared in top-tier management and entrepreneurship journals and received the highest citations in the five years following publication. The award was presented at the Academy of Management meeting in August in Seattle. The research is titled, “Changing with the Times: An Integrated View of Identity, Legitimacy, and New Venture Life Cycles.”
Claire Latham retired after 28 years with the Carson College. She taught many of the upper division accounting classes at WSU Vancouver, several MBA courses, and served as faculty advisor for Nu Theta Beta Alpha Psi and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance organization. Latham’s undergraduate accounting students completed over 300 client internal control evaluations for businesses in the community. She received several awards for research in ethics training and has helped raise scholarships for accounting students through conducting public accounting continuing education ethics workshops.

Marla Meyer received a special award from the Washington Society of CPAs. The award recognizes an individual who is not a CPA but has supported or promoted the activities of CPAs and the society. Meyer is the Moss Adams accounting relations manager.
Ron Moser has been promoted to associate professor (career track) in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Darrel Muehling was included among the most published authors, most cited authors, and most influential authors in two publications related to the Journal of Advertising’s 50th anniversary. Muehling published 21 articles in the journal, which were cited 3,442 times by other researchers. He was also deemed the journal’s most influential author based on Google Scholar metrics. He is an emeritus professor in the Department of Marketing and International Business.

Stephanie Rink, assistant to the dean, received the Administrative Professional Contribution award from the WSU Administrative Professional Advisory Council. The award recognizes administrative professionals who have made exceptional contributions to WSU and their respective units.
Jenni Sandstrom has been promoted to associate professor (career track) in the School of Hospitality Business Management at WSU Vancouver.
Angie Senter, Carson College events manager, was elected as chair of the Administrative Professional Advisory Council.

Soobin Seo has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the School of Hospitality Business Management at WSU Everett. She also received the inaugural WSU Everett Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching 2021–2022. The award recognizes a faculty member who commits time outside of the classroom to prevent students from falling through the cracks and demonstrates enthusiasm for the subject matter.

Seo also received a Best Paper Award from the Asia Pacific Tourism Association conference for her forthcoming research, “Gender Dismatch Effect Between Customers and Gendered Service Robots.” She is the paper’s first author, and doctoral student Xianmei Wu is a coauthor.

Paul Skilton, associate professor of management at WSU Tri-Cities, is the lead author of “Normal Misconduct in the Prescription Opioid Supply Chain” in the Journal of Supply Chain Management. Skilton also was appointed as an associate editor of Journal of Supply Chain Management.
Ryan Sommerfeldt’s doctoral dissertation on whistleblowing was a runner-up for the 2022 Management Accounting Section Outstanding Dissertation Award, presented at the American Accounting Association’s annual meeting in August. His dissertation “Who Gets Stitches? The Effects of Rewarding Whistleblowers and Protecting Their Identity on Subsequent Cooperation” examined how whistleblowing program features affect group cooperation.
Benjamin Warnick has been granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
