Student Involvement

Burtenshaw Lecture

This annual lecture brings to campus some of the top leaders in the hospitality industry.

Eta Sigma Delta

This student organization is an internationally recognized honor society for hospitality and tourism students. It recognizes outstanding academic achievement, meritorious service, and demonstrated professionalism. As one of 60 chapters worldwide, WSU’s Eta Sigma Delta puts on 22 major fundraising events each year to support the organization’s activities—Brewfest in conjunction with Dad’s Weekend and Winefest coinciding with Mom’s Weekend.

National Society of Minorities in Hospitality

NSMH is the premier professional organization for minority hospitality students addressing diversity and multiculturalism, as well as the career development of student members. The organization, open to all WSU hospitality majors and minors, provides events and programs that partner with company sponsors, industry representatives, and other hospitality organizations.

Professional Convention Management Association at WSU

The WSU Chapter of the PCMA functions as a subunit of the Professional Convention Management Association. It supports the mission and goals of the PCMA while providing students with the opportunity to network with industry professionals. WSU PCMA members work with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the PCMA to execute annual meetings and conferences. They assist the WSU School of Hospitality Business Management in the planning and execution of school events such as Career Night, the Burtenshaw Lecture, and alumni meetings. For more information, email the club secretary at wsu.pcma@gmail.com.

SHBM Recruiting Ambassadors

The members of this group, selected through an application and interview process, assist in promoting the School of Hospitality Business Management to prospective students and their parents, provide departmental tours to campus visitors, assist recruiters and other industry partners while on campus, and provide assistance at various off-campus events. Those include, but are not limited to, the Northwest Foodservice Show, the Washington Lodging Association Annual Convention, ProStart competitions, and various recruiting events around the state of Washington. For more information, email shbm@wsu.edu.

Sigma Iota

Sigma Iota is an “umbrella” club for the School of Hospitality Business Management which provides a group to which all hospitality majors/minors can belong. Sigma Iota serves as a freestanding club while providing members access to four additional hospitality clubs/student organizations (Ambassadors, Eta Sigma Delta, National Society of Minorities in Hospitality, and Professional Convention Management Association).
