Executive Murry Mercier Delivers Inaugural Granger Cobb Senior Living Lecture

In 2022, the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living tapped industry executive Murry Mercier to give the institute’s inaugural senior living lecture during the Carson College’s Hospitality Week. His address “Living with Dementia: Hospitality, Home, and Relationships” revealed insights on how he developed a deep regard for seniors and established a successful career in the senior living industry. As a toddler, Mercier often went to work with his grandmother who looked after him while she managed a nursing home. He formed a connection with the residents that stayed with him for life.

Andrew Harding’s Knocking Point Wines Hit a Home Run

A little over ten years ago, alumnus Andrew Harding ('05 MBA) and his friend Stephen Amell were road-tripping from Los Angeles to Oakland to watch the Toronto Blue Jays play. After a quick detour to do a little wine tasting, they missed the game to learn more about wine business. Today, they're hitting a home run with Knocking Point Wines, their subscription-based winery. In 2020, the company received more than 130,000 orders and produced and sold nearly 30,000 total cases. While most sales are online, Nocking Point also recently opened a tasting room in downtown Walla Walla.

WithCo Cocktails COO Shaun McKinley Grateful for WSU Education

At just 17, WithCo Cocktails Chief Operating Officer Shaun McKinley ('10) found his professional calling while working amid the chaos, customers, and cuisine of a fine-dining restaurant. The constant problem-solving and endless learning opportunities intrigued him, and he couldn’t get enough of trying new foods, learning about wine and spirits, and aspiring to know what it means to run a business. Recognizing McKinley’s potential, his boss, who owned the restaurant, knew WSU is one of the top hospitality programs in the country and urged McKinley to look into it for his undergraduate degree. “I’m extremely grateful for the education I received at WSU and the professors who helped prepare me for a career in hospitality,” says McKinley, who has spent the last 12 years building a well-rounded career in the beverage industry.

Alumnus Anthony Anton Inducted into School of Hospitality Business Management Hall of Fame

Anthony Anton (’91 Poli. Sci.) was inducted into the School of Hospitality Business Management’s Hall of Fame in 2022. He is president and CEO of the Washington Hospitality Association, a member-based organization that works at the state and local level to find solutions to challenging issues facing the hospitality industry and workforce. As CEO, Anton has helped the association expand and launch initiatives to help the workforce succeed and focus on protecting and enhancing the hospitality business climate. He has been with the association for more than 20 years and draws on experience from being raised in a family with more than 70 years of hospitality experience in the state.

Washington State Hospitality Association Conference

The School of Hospitality Business Management and the Washington Hospitality Association are both leading sources of education and business insights for the state. Acutely aware of Washington’s shortage of 20,000 hospitality employees, Anthony Anton, WHA president and CEO; Bob Harrington, SHBM director, and Carson College of Business event manager Angie Senter saw value in collaborating to provide hospitality professionals with opportunity for education and networking. Working diligently for about six months, they created the Washington State Hospitality Conference held in 2022.

Port of Benton Partnership Offers Wine and Culinary Education in Prosser

If Walter Clore, a man largely known as the “Father of Washington wine” could see the educational offerings the Carson College of Business is bringing to a center that bears his name, he would undoubtedly raise a toast to progress. Last year, WSU Tri-Cities and the Port of Benton formed a partnership to implement wine and culinary education offerings at the Walter Clore Center in Prosser, Washington, adding to its continuing education and workforce development programs. “We are elated to offer programming that will not only educate individuals about the history of Washington state wine, but also provide sensory and other hands-on experiences that will allow individuals to do a deep dive into all that Washington wine has to offer,” says WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Sandra Haynes.

Remembering Jerry Burtenshaw

Industry icon Jerry Burtenshaw (’56 H&RA) passed away after a long battle with cancer on Sept. 2, 2021. Along with his family, he leaves behind a massive legacy in the hospitality industry. His list of accomplishments and legacy impacts are long and include founding the Carson College of Business Burtenshaw Distinguished Lecture series and many other projects at Washington State University. He was also a member of WSU’s Hall of Fame and is the namesake of the association’s Hall of Fame recognition, the Burtenshaw Award.

Celebrating Stacie Hamilton

Passionate. It is a word used by many to describe Stacie Hamilton (’81 Busi. Admin.) when reflecting upon her work in the wine business sector and higher education through her support of WSU Tri-Cities’ wine and business programs. Hamilton recently passed away at the age of 63, but her memory will live on in the form of her many contributions that have set the stage for wine business education in Washington state.

Honoring Byron Marlowe, Don Smith Distinguished Professor of Hospitality Business Management

Byron Marlowe’s warm personality, infectious smile, and passion for his career as an associate professor of hospitality touched everyone who knew him. His unexpected passing December 28, 2021, left the Carson College and his many students and colleagues with overwhelming sadness but at the same time, a cache of wonderful memories that will sustain the legacy of his exemplary career.

Aspiring Hotelier Emma Claire Spring Sweeps $50K Pitch Competition

Recent alumna Emma Claire Spring always dreamed of owning a boutique hotel. In 2021, she learned about She Has a Deal, an educational real estate investment platform that creates pathways to hotel ownership and development for young women. She entered the company’s hotel pitch competition and spent several months developing a proposal for a Delta Hotel conversion located in Chantilly, Virginia. On June 5, 2021, she won the competition and $50,000 in equity. Current hospitality student Makenna Price is slated to compete in the 2022 competition.
