U.S. News & World Report ranked the college’s online MBA program as 20th among the nation’s Best Online MBA Programs. The online MBA program also ranked 15th in Best Online MBA Programs for Veterans, and the online business bachelor’s program earned 8th place in the rankings.
Beta Alpha Psi chapters in Pullman and Vancouver were recognized as “superior chapters” for the 2020–2021 academic year by the international BAP organization. The chapters received $500 each from KPMG and the KPMG Foundation. Scholarly Associate Professor Jason Porter (Pullman) and Associate Professor Claire Latham (Vancouver) are the chapter advisors.
School of Hospitality Business Management students participated in an industry tour in November 2021, visiting Seattle-area hotels, the Washington State Convention Center, and the Space Needle. Howard Wright III (’76), whose family’s construction company built the iconic structure, gave students a tour of the Space Needle. Faculty and staff members included Amy Alonzo, Marriott Foundation Industry relations manager; Brian McGinnis, Marriott Foundation corporate engagement coordinator; and Mark Beattie, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at WSU Everett.
Jack Costa, a senior majoring in wine and beverage business management, launched a new podcast, Wine Heretics. Costa describes the podcast as “a conversation about wine,” and he interviews growers, scientists, wine writers, and others for Wine Heretics.
Online MBA student Kalinda Kindle (’16 Comm.) attended the two-week virtual Amazon Women in Operations Conference last fall. She took first place in the conference’s essay contest, winning a $2,500 scholarship toward her MBA studies at WSU.
Ryan McKinley and Connor North received Reed McCurry Scholarships in Business for the spring 2022 semester. The Reed McCurry Scholarship is awarded to outstanding WSU accounting students who may also show interest in entrepreneurship. McCurry (’70 Busi. Admin., Accounting) said he was supporting the field of accounting with thanks for the success his career brought him, and for the outstanding learning and life experiences that came with it.
Yafang Li received the 2021 Doctoral Student Service Award from the Association for Information Systems. The award was presented at the International Conference on Information Systems in December 2021. Li is a doctoral candidate in information systems.
Perebotie Amughan (’21 Mgmt.) works for TikTok as a technical recruiting coordinator in the Seattle area.
Joe Fugere (’84 Hotel & Rest. Admin.) was featured in a KREM 2 broadcast about how his Puget Sound-area restaurants are helping support employees who are Ukrainian immigrants and raising money for Ukrainian relief funds. Fugere is the founder and CEO of Tutta Bella Neapolitan Pizzeria.
Johnathan McKinney (’20 MBA) is director of product risk at Charles Schwab in Lone Tree, Colorado. His team protects Charles Schwab and its clients through risk assessment, identification, and mitigation in the company’s digital services division. McKinney is a US Army veteran.
Dustin Winkelman (’17 EMBA) is vice president of analytics and data at Morgan Stanley. In his new role, Winkelman supports wealth management initiatives through digital capabilities, data analytics, and business intelligence. Winkleman is a 13-year veteran of the US Army and a 2021 graduate of the Wells Fargo Glide program.
Christina Chi, a professor in the School of Hospitality Business Management, is in the top two percent of the world’s most cited scientists, according to Stanford University and Elsevier. Chi received recognition for both the 2020 list and a career-long list. Chi was also appointed to the Business Studies Panel of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong and nominated to participate in the WSU Provost’s Leadership Academy for 2021–2022. She also spoke about sustainable travel during the Sustainability Speaker Series at WSU Island and Snohomish County Extension’s programs in November 2021.
Joe Gladstone and business faculty at Carleton University, University of Melbourne, and Massey University received a three-year, $75,000 Spencer Foundation grant. Their project will explore post-secondary graduate business programs from Native American, First Nations, Māori, and Australian Indigenous perspectives. Gladstone is a career-track assistant professor of management at WSU Everett.
Kunter Gunasti, assistant professor in the Department of Marketing and International Business, is the lead author of a forthcoming article, “Cumulative Impact Neglect in Processing Sequential Changes,” in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, and the coauthor of a forthcoming article, “The Conflict Between Partnership and Fairness in the Decision of Whom to Help,” in the Journal of Business Ethics.
Dipra Jha, scholarly associate professor and assistant director in the School of Hospitality Business Management, was invited to talk about “Cultural Contexts in Business” during a webinar at Bahria Business School in Pakistan.
Jeff Joireman, chair and professor in the Department of Marketing and International Business, gave the keynote address at the First Uruguayan Congress of Cognitive Science and Second Symposium in Education, Cognition and Neuroscience in Montevideo, Uruguay, in November 2021. Joireman is also the coauthor on two forthcoming journal articles: “Under a Political Cloud: How Politicized Brands Shape Gift Appreciation,” in Journal of the Association for Consumer Research, and “When Time is of the Essence: Development and Validation of Brief Consideration of Future (and Immediate) Consequences Scales,” in Personality and Individual Differences.
Chuck Munson, PhD program director, is the coauthor of the textbook, Operations Management: Sustainability and Supply Chain Management, which was recently released in its 14th edition.
Ryan Sommerfeldt, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting, received an Outstanding Manuscript Reviewer Award from the 2022 American Accounting Association’s management accounting section’s midyear meeting.
