US News & World Report has ranked the Carson College’s online business degree 3rd among best online undergraduate programs, and WSU’s Online MBA program 20th among the nation’s Best Online MBA Programs. The Online MBA ranked 13th in Best Online MBA Programs for Veterans.
The 2020 issue of Dividend, the Carson College of Business alumni magazine, received a silver CASE District VIII Communications Award in the alumni/general interest 1x per year magazine category. The award recognizes excellence in marketing, communications, and advancement among the 130-plus member institutions within DVIII.
Doctoral student Kelvin Chiang has been hired as the memory fitness lead by Aljoya Thornton Place, a senior living community in Seattle managed by Era Living. Chiang was hired after working at Aljoya Thornton Place as a doctoral intern through the college’s Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living.
Three Carson College accounting students—Abigail Ofenloch, Josie Orvik, and Alexander Stuart—received Reed McCurry Scholarships for all or part of the 2020-2021 academic year. The Reed McCurry Endowed Scholarship in Business is awarded to outstanding accounting students at WSU who may also show interest in entrepreneurship. McCurry (’70 Busi. Admin., Acct.) worked as an accountant and entrepreneur. In creating the scholarship, McCurry said he was supporting the field of accounting out of thanks for the success his career brought him, and for the outstanding learning and life experiences that came with it.

Lisa Bliss (’80 HR&A) was named one of the “Top 50 Women in Travel” for 2020 by the Global Business Travel Association. Bliss manages Boeing’s global transient preferred hotel program featuring over 1,700 preferred hotels around the world. She also serves as a member of the college’s Hospitality Business Management Advisory Board.
Mike Holcomb (’20 EMBA) has taken a position as senior healthcare analyst for Koniag Government Services in Vancouver, Washington. In his new role, Holcomb leads a consulting team assisting the Defense Health Administration Healthcare Operations Support Division as it transforms healthcare for 9.6 million beneficiaries while concurrently supporting COVID-19 response efforts. He is retired from the U.S. Marine Corps.
Nam Nguyen (’19 Busi. Admin.) received a second President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2020 from the Corporation for National and Community Service. He also received a prior award in 2015. Nguyen volunteers as a Study Zone tutor at the King County Library System, helping K-12 students with homework. He also volunteers for the nonprofit Chicken Soup Brigade in Seattle and serves as an online crisis counselor with Crisis Text Line. He was also a featured moderator at NASA’s 2021 Transformative Aeronautics Concepts Program Showcase.
Yoshiki Shimizu (’19 PhD), assistant professor of finance at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, received a 2020 Outstanding Reviewer Award for his contributions to and reviewer activities for the Review of Behavioral Finance. He was also recognized for outstanding teaching and dedication to helping students by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Educational Innovation.
Fangjun Xiao (’19 PhD), an assistant professor of accounting at San Jose State University, and Bernard Wong-On-Wing, professor and chair of the Department of Accounting, won a Public Interest Paper of the Year Award from the American Accounting Association (AAA). The paper, “An Examination of Employee Sensitivity to the Risk of Whistleblowing via Social Media,” received the award for the category of accounting information systems and strategic and emerging technologies. Xiao presented the paper at a February section meeting of AAA, and she and Wong-On-Wing also will present the paper at AAA’s annual meeting this summer.
Beau Barnes was recognized as a WSU Provost’s Featured Faculty Member for the 2020-2021 academic year. Barnes is an associate professor in the Department of Accounting and the holder of the Moss Adams Faculty Fellowship. He teaches cost accounting and auditing, is recognized for his research in regulatory reporting and accounting education, and also is the department’s coordinator for the doctoral program.
Mark Beattie, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs at WSU Everett, and Soobin Seo, assistant professor of hospitality business management, were among Everett faculty members who presented research during a virtual session hosted by the University of Zagreb in Croatia and broadcast live across Europe.
Jeremy Beus, associate professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship, is the lead author on two forthcoming journal articles. “Climate-Context Congruence: Examining Context as a Boundary Condition for Climate-Performance Relationships” is in press at the Journal of Applied Psychology. ”Making Sense of Climate: A Meta-Analytic Extension of the Competing Values Framework” is in press with Organizational Psychology Review.
Robert Harrington’s work on food and wine pairing, including theory and method, was featured in the newly released Volume IV of Bullipedia, titled “Sommellerie: Wine in the Restaurant Context.” Bullipedia, an online culinary database, is the work of modernist chef Ferran Adrià, operator of the former elBulli restaurant near Barcelona. Harrington is the Ivar B. Haglund Chair in Hospitality Business Management and the director for the School of Hospitality Business Management. He was also part of a documentary on the evolution of food and wine pairing produced several years ago in Barcelona by a former sommelier at elBulli restaurant.
Jacob Jaggi, assistant professor in the Department of Accounting, received the American Accounting Association’s (AAA) 2021 Outstanding Auditing Dissertation Award for “When Does the Internal Audit Function Enhance Audit Committee Effectiveness?” The award was presented January 15, 2021, at the Auditing Section of AAA.
Jeff Joireman, professor and chair of the Department of Marketing and International Business, is a coauthor on two forthcoming journal articles. “The Influence of Customer Race on Perceived Discrimination, Anger and Coping Strategies Following Subtle Degradation of Restaurant Service,” is in press with the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. “Cooperation and Trust Across Societies during the COVID-19 Pandemic” is in press with the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology.
Alexander Kier, assistant professor of entrepreneurship at WSU Vancouver, is the coauthor of a forthcoming article, “Do Policy Makers Take Grants for Granted? The Efficacy of Public Sponsorship for Innovative Entrepreneurship,” in the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.
Benjamin Warnick, assistant professor of entrepreneurship at WSU Vancouver, is the lead author and Alexander Kier is a coauthor on a forthcoming article, “Head in the Clouds? Cannabis Users’ Creativity in New Venture Ideation Depends on Their Entrepreneurial Passion and Experience,” in the Journal of Business Venturing.
