U.S. News & World Report included the Carson College of Business’s online bachelor’s and MBA programs in its 2023 rankings. The college ranked No. 27 for Best Online MBA Programs, No. 21 for Best Undergraduate International Business Programs, No. 17 for Best Online MBA Programs for Veterans, and No. 12 for Best Online Bachelors Programs in Business.
Muzi Liu, a doctoral student in marketing, presented her research at the 2022 Institute for the Study of Business Markets Academic Conference in Chicago. Carson College faculty U.N. Umesh and Jeff Joireman coauthored the paper titled, “Holding Salespeople Responsible for Late-Paying Accounts Predicts Lower Role Clarity, Higher Job Stress, and Customer-Directed Deviance.”
Doctoral student Jalal Sarabadani received the Best Student Paper Award at a workshop preceding the 2022 International Conference on Information Systems in Copenhagen in December. Robert Crossler, chair of the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship, coauthored the paper titled, “Trading Well-Being for Information Security Policy Compliance: An Investigation of the Positive and Negative Effects of Security Education, Training, and Awareness Programs.”
Ten Carson College students are studying at César Ritz Colleges in Brig, Switzerland, during the spring 2023 semester with faculty advisor Mark Beattie. Student Mikayla Scheer, who is majoring in entrepreneurship and English literature, says, “Traveling by train is quick, easy, and affordable. We traveled down to Rome for a quick weekend adventure and also visited Switzerland’s capital city of Bern. During this study abroad, we have met people from all around the world. We get to share our experiences from the US and learn about other cultures and daily life in other countries.”
Accounting students took part in a “Meet the Firms” tour in the Seattle area on Jan. 4-5. Participating students included Nyssa Lee, Kaelyn Singh, Graham Holtrop, Taylor Coan, and Julia Matthews. They visited ten firms: BDO, PwC, KPMG, Moss Adams, Deloitte, EY, Clark Nuber, CBIZ Berntson Porter, CLA, and Sweeney Conrad. Marla Meyer, the college’s Moss Adams accounting relations manager, led the tour, and faculty members Jason Porter, Jacob Jaggi, and Ryan Sommerfeldt also participated. A student, faculty and alumni event held at Flatstick Pub allowed the students to spend more time with WSU alumni and learn about their careers. Accounting Department Chair Bernie Wong-on-Wing and faculty member Kat Harris joined the alumni event. Among the alumni who attended was Kristin Sugamele, who has supported accounting majors with a scholarship.
Gihan Edirisinghe (’20 PhD), an assistant professor at Western Kentucky University, received the 2023 Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching for the university’s Gordon Ford College of Business.
Alicia (Olfert) Harvey (’96 Hotel & Rest. Admin.) has been appointed by the Montana governor to serve a second three-year term on the Montana Tourism Advisory Council. She was elected council chair in October.
Tag Jacklin (’14 MBA) joined the Coeur d’Alene Bancorp and bankcda board of directors. Jacklin is a board member and president of Jacklin Land Company and Riverbend Commerce Park in Post Falls, Idaho, and a partner in Bighorn Ventures.
Bernard Lagat (’01 MIS) was inducted into the Inland Northwest Sports Hall of Fame. He was a four-time NCAA champion as a WSU distance runner and helped his team set a collegiate record for the distance medley.
Jason Lee (’00 Busi. Admin.) is chief information security officer at Splunk, a leading data platform for security and observability. Lee has 20 years of experience in technology with a focus on information security and operating mission-critical services. His career includes roles at Zoom, Salesforce, and Microsoft.
Tim Mulligan (’90 Hosp. Busi. Mgmt.) is the chief human resource officer for BENlabs, a company owned by Bill Gates. The Los Angeles-based firm uses machine learning and AI-driven insights to empower brands and creators to reach advertising-wary consumers in authentic ways. Mulligan’s career includes previous roles at the San Diego Zoo, Vulcan Inc., and the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He recently published a cookbook, “A Perfect 10,” and his Perfect 10 blog can be found on Instagram.
In Memoriam
Larry Calvin (’58 Busi. Admin.), a longtime resident of Sitka, Alaska, died December 21, 2022. During his time at WSU, he ran a ski gear exchange for students, according to his obituary in the Daily Sitka Sentinel. He and his wife owned several businesses in Sitka. He was a fisherman and a diver, and his love of the outdoors led to his involvement with the Sitka Conservation Society
Ken Butterfield received a 2022 Outstanding Reviewer Award from Business Ethics Quarterly. Butterfield is an associate professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Debbie Compeau coauthored a journal article that won the 2022 Best Conference Paper Award from the Special Interest Group on IT in Healthcare of the Association for Information Systems. “Understanding Information Systems Success: A Hybrid View” was published in the European Journal of Information Systems. Compeau is senior associate dean for faculty affairs and research.
Dipra Jha received the 2023 Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award from the western region chapter of the International Federation Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education. The peer-reviewed award recognizes Jha’s work in incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion in his teaching and outreach at the Carson College of Business. Jha is a scholarly associate professor and assistant director for the School of Hospitality Business Management.
Hana Johnson is the author of a forthcoming article in Human Relations, “Ideas Endorsed, Credit Claimed: Managerial Credit Claiming Weakens the Benefits of Voice Endorsement on Future Voice Behavior through Respect and Work Group Identification.” Johnson is an assistant professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Alex Kier is a field editor for the Journal of Business Venturing in the area of psychology and entrepreneurship. He is an associate professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Chuck Munson is the corresponding author of an article in Expert Systems with Applications, “Strategic Rearrangement of Retail Shelf Space Allocations: Using Data Insights to Encourage Impulse Buying.” The coauthor is Gihan Edirisinghe (’20 PhD), assistant professor at Western Kentucky University. Munson is the director of the college’s PhD program.
Arvin Sahaym is the newly appointed associate vice provost for interdisciplinary initiatives at the WSU Graduate School. He will promote interdisciplinary research, scholarship, and innovation-oriented entrepreneurial initiatives for the benefit of society and the world. Sahaym will continue to serve as a professor in the college’s Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.
Angie Senter will present “Creating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Events” at The Special Event, a national conference on event management, in Orlando, Florida, in late March. Senter is the college’s event manager.
Yixuan Xiao’s article, “Long-term Service Agreement in Electricity Supply Chair with Renewable Energy Penetration,” has been accepted for publication in Production and Operations Management. She is an assistant professor of operations management in the Department of Finance and Management Science.
