At the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/business.wsu.edu\/news-events\/events\/business-technology-symposium\/\">Business Technology Symposium<\/a>, top business executives came together to talk about how technology can and will change the world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3057\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/3488\/2016\/12\/Heidi-Melin.jpg\" alt=\"heidi-melin\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heidi Melin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event opened with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/heidimelin?authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=xSFN&amp;locale=en_US&amp;srchid=1784584441480367128903&amp;srchindex=1&amp;srchtotal=5&amp;trk=vsrp_people_res_name&amp;trkInfo=VSRPsearchId%3A1784584441480367128903%2CVSRPtargetId%3A1607197%2CVSRPcmpt%3Aprimary%2CVSRPnm%3Atrue%2CauthType%3ANAME_SEARCH\">Heidi Melin<\/a>, the chief marketing officer of Plex Systems, Inc. and the master of ceremonies for the event. When she began her career, she hadn\u2019t expected to end up working so closely with technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe flexible as you develop your career,\u201d she said. \u201cDo what you love, but be open to new possibilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Plex is a company that focuses on providing cloud-based plant floor management systems. Now, he focuses on transforming organizations using the power of technology and creativity.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"padding: 0px\">Embracing chaos<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIn chaos, there\u2019s opportunity,\u201d Tarr said. \u201cNever shy away from chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his time at Verizon, text messaging was a new technology. At first, his team thought no one would use it, but they were in for a surprise. Zumiez, an international retailer with over 650 stores worldwide, changed its distribution system to keep up with online retailers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone once said to me \u2018You guys hacked your way to success,\u2019\u201d Curtis laughed. \u201cTechnology was changing the delivery expectations for customers, and we had to compete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of central online distribution centers, Zumiez made each one of its retail stores a mini distribution center, Curtis explained. The system makes deliveries faster and gives sales associates the opportunity to personalize each order, which customers love, he continued.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3145\" style=\"width: 144px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-3145 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.wp.wsu.edu\/uploads\/sites\/3488\/2016\/11\/Gil_miner.jpg\" alt=\"gil_miner\" width=\"144\" height=\"144\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adriana Gil Miner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3 style=\"padding: 0px\">The emotional side of data<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/agilminer?authType=NAME_SEARCH&amp;authToken=AARA&amp;locale=en_US&amp;trk=tyah&amp;trkInfo=clickedVertical%3Amynetwork%2CclickedEntityId%3A5045969%2CauthType%3ANAME_SEARCH%2Cidx%3A1-1-1%2CtarId%3A1480367097157%2Ctas%3AAdriana%20Gil%20\">Adriana Gil Miner<\/a>, the vice president of corporate communications for Tableau, finished out the event talking about the emotional side of data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData is information, and information is full of emotions and stories,\u201d she explained. \u201cWith the advances of the Internet, it\u2019s easy for any of us to produce, analyze, visualize, and share data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is why data literacy is a critical skill in today\u2019s marketplace, Gil Miner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData analytics is becoming a critical skill,\u201d she said. \u201cYou need to be more data literate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The symposium ended with a discussion of how to succeed in the marketplace after graduation. The panel agreed that knowing technology is key, but it\u2019s also important that students have ambition and drive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo your work. Do it with joy, and bring your creativity with you,\u201d Curtis said. \u201cWinners are determined during business hours.
