March 2021 – New Hires

Alex Soberanes (’19 Hist.) is an academic advisor at the Carson Center for Student Success. He is a first-generation college graduate and as an undergraduate, worked with first year and first-generation students as a peer mentor through Multicultural Student Services and the Office of Academic Engagement. In this free time, he enjoys watching anime, spending time with his dog, and tending to his plant collection.
Corey Sutter (’13 Psych., ’15 MA Poli. Sci.) is an academic advisor at the Carson Center for Student Success.  Sutter previously worked for the University of Iowa in the Center for Diversity and Enrichment, supporting Native American, Asian American, and first-generation students and teaching classes on education inequity in the United States. He most recently worked at Spokane Community College, where he worked with foster youth and underrepresented student populations.

Building up Businesses and the Community

Jamie Callison was featured in a December 21, 2020, article by William Spence in the Moscow-Pullman Daily News, where he discussed the Pullman Serves it Forward project he started to help low-income families by providing gift cards to local restaurants during the pandemic. The gift cards are purchased through donations and the effort also supports the local restaurant industry. Callison is the executive chef at the School of Hospitality Business Management and director of the Marriott Hospitality Culinary Innovation Center.

Morning News Extra with Michelle Carter

Michelle Carter was featured in a November 17, 2020, report with Mike Davis of KGMI Radio in Bellingham, where she discussed her work to increase gender equity among information systems faculty in the United States, including women’s career advancement to full professor. She was also interviewed by Abby Davis of the Daily Evergreen for the November 16, 2020 story, “Professor Seeks to Increase Number of Women Working in Information Systems.” Carter is an associate professor in the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.

KOMO Radio News Interview with Robert Crossler

Robert Crossler was featured in a December 7, 2020, broadcast with Sue Romero on KOMO Radio News in Seattle, where he talked about surveying parents and teens about their views on using contact tracing apps during the pandemic. Crossler is the Philip L. Kays Distinguished Associate Professor and chair of the Department of Management, Information Systems, and Entrepreneurship.

As Enthusiasm for Black Friday Continues to Fade, COVID-19 May Bring an End to Big Shopping Holidays

Joan Giese, clinical associate professor in the Department of Marketing and International Business, provided insights about the 2020 holiday shopping season and the college’s fourth annual retail survey which were quoted extensively in national and regional media, including online news outlets, newspapers, and TV news broadcasts, including the November 17, 2020, issues of YahooFinance and Markets Insider. Expert Advice: Understanding Car Insurance Quotes & How to Compare

Kunter Gunasti, assistant professor of marketing, was a featured expert in the February, 4, 2021, issue on car insurance in MoneyGeek.com. He was also featured in the February 5, 2021, MoneyGeek.com article, “Expert Advice: Understanding Liability Only Car Insurance.”

Pacific Northwest Businesses Cautiously Optimistic for the Future

Chip Hunter, dean of the Carson College of Business, was interviewed by Sean Owsley for a February 18, 2021, broadcast by KHQ-TV, Spokane’s NBC-affiliated station. Hunter spoke about the results of the college’s recent Business in the Northwest Survey.

Does Getting High Give you Great Business Ideas? Yes and No, New Study Finds

Benjamin Warnick, assistant professor of entrepreneurship at WSU Vancouver, was featured in a February 4, 2021, story by Dennis Thompson in US News & World Report. In his research, Warnick found people who regularly use cannabis come up with ideas that are more original but less feasible compared to people who do not use cannabis. The story was also featured February 4, 2021 in Health Day, and in a February 11, 2021, story by Ben Adlin, “Starting a Business? Study Finds Marijuana May Help—And Hinder,” in Marijuana Moment.
