Fall 2020 CCB - Online Classes

Frequently Asked Questions

As announced on July 24, 2020, all Washington State University courses on all campuses will be offered via online, distance delivery for the Fall 2020 semester. Having an already well-established presence and expertise in online, distance learning delivery, the Carson College of Business is well-positioned to offer our courses via online, distance instruction.

As you read through the FAQs below, here are a few definitions you should understand:

  • Asynchronous classes do not have a set meeting time/date. That is, you will find no meeting time listed in the Schedule of Courses. Students complete all course lessons and assignments on their own and are expected to independently follow instructions and meet all course deadlines set by the instructor. All Global Campus classes are taught asynchronously.
  • Synchronous classes have a set date/time when all students are expected to meet together with the course instructor. That is, you will find a meeting time listed in the Schedule of Courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Online Business Classes – FAQs

Q.
With all of my classes being taught online, do I still need to meet at a certain day or time for my fall business classes?

A.
Most courses offered by the Carson College of Business will require that students attend class online at the scheduled day and time that is listed in the Schedule of Classes (also known as “synchronous delivery”). Students on all campuses can view the finalized information regarding their schedule of classes beginning on August 1, 2020 here.

Students can find details regarding meeting expectations in the notes section listed below each business course on the Schedule of Classes webpage referenced above on August 1, 2020. In addition, instructors will share further details with students during the first week of classes.

Finally, it is important that you review your fall schedule carefully, taking note of the time and day each class is scheduled, and also the specific dates of instruction. Business courses that are offered by the Global Campus are 7-weeks long, rather than a full semester. This means that classes that are offered on both the Global Campus and a physical campus (i.e. Pullman, Tri-Cities, Vancouver), may be scheduled from August – October or October – December. For these courses, it is possible that you may start the semester with four classes and have a fifth class that starts in October. If this is the case, it will be listed in the Schedule of Courses.

Q.
How will my online business courses be delivered in the fall?

A.
The vast majority of business courses will be delivered synchronously rather than asynchronously. Thus, distance learning instruction will include, at a minimum, live streaming of lessons via Zoom. Instructors may also provide recorded lectures and course material via Blackboard. For the few courses that are asynchronous, courses will be delivered via recorded lecture.

Q.
What should I do if I am unable to attend the scheduled class meeting times for the classes that I am registered for?

A.
If you are unable to attend online classes at their scheduled time this fall, you should consider transferring to Global Campus before the first day of classes for the Fall 2020 term. This may be a good option for students who are residing in a different time zone this fall.

  • If your goal is to temporarily transfer for a semester or two and eventually return to your original campus, you should complete the Intercampus Enrollment Form.

Please note WSU Global Campus will begin processing these requests on August 1, 2020. More details regarding intercampus enrollment requests can be found on the webpage referenced above.

  • If your goal is to permanently transfer to the Global Campus and not return to your current campus, you should complete the Change of Campus Form.

Please note that students permanently changing to the Global Campus from any other WSU Campus are required to complete Global Campus orientation, even if you have completed an orientation at another WSU campus. More details regarding Change of Campus requests can be found on the webpage referenced above.

**Students may also use the Intercampus Enrollment Request and Change of Campus Request forms to transfer to WSU’s other campus locations (i.e. Everett, Tri-Cities, Vancouver, Pullman).

Q.
Must I meet with an advisor before classes begin this Fall?

A.
If you are registered for fall classes and do not need help adjusting your fall schedule, you do not need to meet with your academic advisor prior to the fall semester. You can find the answers to many questions by reviewing your myWSU Academic Requirements report, however, if you are considering changing to another campus, or taking a semester or two off, or are uncertain about your next educational steps, please make an appointment to meet with your advisor.

Q.
Can I take Fall semester off without consequences?

A.
Taking a semester or two off will likely delay your anticipated graduation date. Depending on how long you take off there are several things you should consider:

  • If you are not enrolled for two or more semesters, you must apply for admission as a returning student.
  • Check with Student Financial Services to see how your financial aid will be impacted by taking a semester off.
  • The Carson College launched a new business curriculum in Fall 2019. Students who entered WSU prior to Fall 2019 and are not yet certified/admitted into business, could see a change in their degree requirements. Please check with your advisor to find out how taking time off will affect your degree requirements.

Q.
What technology do I need at home to attend classes?

A.
This online student technology guide may help you be more successful in your remote classes. In addition, the Student Affairs office will be introducing a series of student success resources at the start of the fall semester.

If your computer is not up to spec, you may be able to borrow a Chromebook from WSU. Check the Loaner Chromebook Program for more information.

If you do not have good internet wifi access, WSU campuses have set up wifi hotspots in many parking lots. Check the Loaner Hotspot site for more information.

If you are on campus other than Pullman, that campus may have additional options.

Q.
Will my student club still meet this fall?

A.
Most business clubs will continue to meet remotely. More information about business clubs on your campus will be emailed to students in the fall.

Q.
Which of the Career Resources the Carson Center provides will still be available?

A.
While each campus will be offering their own career services for students on their campus, one of the positive outcomes of being remote in the fall is that students on all WSU campuses will be able to attend both the WSU Career Expo and the Carson College’s Career Networking Night. Previously, these events were in-person career networking events held in Pullman. In the fall, both will be online events, and students from all WSU campuses will be able to network with internship and career employers. In addition, career development workshops and employer panels that were typically coordinated as in-person Pullman events will also be available to business students on all campuses this fall.

Global Campus Options – FAQs

Q.
What is the Global Campus?

A.
Global Campus is Washington State University’s online campus. Q.
Should I consider changing to the Global Campus?

A.
It depends:

  • Students who should consider changing to the Global Campus include those who meet all these four conditions:
    1. Students who will be living in a different time zone in the Fall 2020 and find it difficult to attend online class meeting times.
    2. Students who are self-directed and have experience taking asynchronous online classes.
    3. Students who are academically prepared for condensed 7-week classes which are more fast-paced and demanding than semester-long classes.
    4. Students whose major is offered on the Global Campus. Not all business majors are offered there.
  • Students who should consider staying on their current campus in Fall 2020 include those who meet any of these three conditions:
    1. Students whose majors/classes are not offered on the Global Campus.
    2. Students who are able to attend their campus’ classes remotely.
    3. Students who prefer live instruction and classroom interaction.

Q.
Am I required to meet with my academic advisor in order to transfer to Global Campus?

A.
No. Students are able to initiate both intercampus enrollment and change of campus requests without assistance from their academic advisor. However, both types of requests are subject to approval and course availability. If you have questions, please contact your academic advisor.

Q.
Are all business majors offered on Global Campus?

A.
No. Some business majors are not offered on Global Campus. If you decide to transfer to Global Campus either temporarily or permanently, it is important to ensure that your major is offered. Business majors offered on the Global Campus can be found here. If your major is not offered on the Global Campus, you should strongly consider maintaining your enrollment on your current campus as the courses you’ve registered for will still be accessible via distance learning instruction. If attending these courses is not possible, please arrange to meet with your academic advisor to discuss your options.

Q.
Are the requirements for my degree/major the same on Global Campus?

A.
Yes. All business majors have the same degree and major requirements across all WSU campuses. Thus, courses completed on Global Campus will work to satisfy your degree and major requirements when and if you return to your original campus.

Q.
Where can I find out if my classes are available on Global Campus?

A.
You can find the schedule of classes for WSU Global Campus here. Please note that business courses offered on the Global Campus are not always offered at the same frequency as they are on other WSU campuses. It is possible that the classes for which you are and need to be enrolled in during the Fall 2020 term are not available on the Global Campus. If you find that this is the case, you should strongly consider maintaining your enrollment on your current campus as your courses will still be accessible via distance learning instruction. If this is not possible, please arrange to meet with your academic advisor to discuss your options.

Q.
How do Global Campus business courses compare to business courses on my campus?

A.
While the curriculum for all business courses across all WSU campuses is the same, the scheduling of courses on all campuses is different. Rather than the course spanning the entire semester (August to December), business courses on the Global Campus are scheduled in two, condensed seven-week sessions (August to October, and October to December). When making the decision to transfer to Global Campus, you should strongly consider if you are have the time to manage the rigor and course workload of a condensed course schedule. For instance, if a course in Pullman would normally require 10 hours per week of your time for 15 weeks, that same course in the Global campus will required 20 hours per week for seven weeks. Students should also note that non-business classes offered through the Global Campus may be scheduled as full-semester classes. To better understand the difference between distance-delivered classes on the Global Campus versus the physical campuses, review the Global Campus website.

Q.
I submitted an Intercampus Enrollment request or Change of Campus request prior to WSU’s announcement of all classes offered remotely. What should I do if I want to cancel this and take classes from my original campus?

A.
With courses across the WSU system moving to distance deliver, some students have reached out the advisors and the Global Campus asking how to reverse their Change of Campus or Intercampus Enrollment request. If you have submitted an Intercampus Enrollment Request, you will receive an email from the Global Campus asking if you wish to proceed with this request. You must respond by August 3, 2020 if you wish to proceed with your request. Otherwise, your request will be denied.

Students wishing to reverse their Change of Campus request will need to submit a new Change of Campus request reversing your original request. For specific questions, please email the Global Campus Registrar as soon as possible.

Q.
Am I able to transfer to Global Campus after the Fall 2020 term begins?

A.
No. Students must apply to transfer to the Global Campus prior to the first day of the semester. Applications for Intercampus Enrollment and Change of Campus Requests will not be accepted once the semester starts.
